Day 6 - Sunrise Over Florence

The sun just cresting the mountains in Florence - June 27, 2023

June 27, 2023: Today was the kind of day I dreamed about when I thought of traveling to italy. It was one of those perfect days that has all of the right elements. We got up at 4:30AM and were out the door by 5:00AM to make our way to the Piazza Michelangelo. The Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence is the most famous observation point of the city panorama, reproduced in countless postcards and a must see when visiting the city. It was built starting in 1869 to a design by the architect Giuseppe Poggi on a hill just south of the historic centre, to complete the redevelopment works on the left bank of the Arno River. During my research, I found that this was the best place to watch the sunrise and they were not wrong! We picked a morning with a cloudless sky and it was absolutely breathtaking. I used our GoPro to take a video you can view in the Photos and Videos section after I get it uploaded. We also took many photos!

Next up for the day was the Uffizi Gallery. The Uffizi Gallery is home to the most famous collection of Renaissance art in Italy. Along with famous paintings, there are also numerous sculptures and drawings. Some of the most famous paintings include Sandro Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus”, Michelango’s “The Holy Family - Doni Tondo”, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Annunciation” and “Adoration of the Magi”, Giotto’s “Ognissanti Madonna” and so much more. We were in awe standing in the room with these incredible works of art.

We followed our same routine of going back to our apartment for the afternoon during the heat of the day. Later in the afternoon we headed out and walked around the city before heading to dinner at “La Giostra”. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. It was hands down the best meal we have had since coming to Italy and maybe the best Italian meal I have ever had. The restaurant was so beautiful inside. The service was impeccable and the chef stopped by our table a couple of times to check on us. He made Ariabatta for Jimm even though it was not on the menu. For dessert we had cheesecake. It was the first time I have ever had it served warm and it was devine!! We made another reservation before we even left our table for our last night here just so we can experience it again. I am still drooling…🤤

Jimm’s rating for today: *****
