Day 5: Witness for the Prosecution
Today was a really fun day! We started out by heading to Charing Cross Station to take the train to London Bridge and then a quick walk to Borough Market. This market is one of the largest and oldest food markets in London, with a market on the site dating back to at least the 12th century. The present buildings were built in the 1850s. Borough Market is located in Southwark, London’s oldest suburb. So old, in fact, that Southwark was once a Roman settlement. Trading in some shape or form has been happening at this market for hundreds of years. There were a few things we wanted to try at the market today. Jimm wanted the duck confit wrap and oysters, I wanted the strawberries with chocolate and a Toastie (grilled cheese). We were able to get all but the toastie, they were closed today. We also got all the makings for a nice dinner of sourdough bread, olive oil, prosciutto, pepperoni, two kinds of cheese, some cannolis and a bottle of wine. The vibe was so cool. The longer we were there, the more crowded it became and I was definitely cold, so we headed back to our flat to drop off our goodies and warm up (it was another blustery day in London).
Our next excursion of the day was to head over to the old London Court House to see a play called “Witness for the Prosecution,” a play adapted by Agatha Christie from her 1925 short story "Traitor's Hands". The play originally opened in London on 28 October 1953 at the Winter Garden Theatre. This version has been running for 8 years in its current location on London’s South Bank. We paid to be part of the jury, so we had a part in the play itself as jurors 11 & 12. The play itself was so well written and the actors did an amazing job. We were fully immersed in the story. We highly recommend seeing this show if you get a chance to visit London!
After the show, we made the walk back across the Thames to our flat and put together our charcuterie board. It was so nice to warm up and spend the evening indoors with our bottle of wine and amazing spread. We watched a new animated Christmas show on Netflix called “This Christmas.” The show is based in Wellington-on-the-Sea and is co-written by Love Actually director Richard Curtis. Santa (or Father Christmas) is voiced by Brian Cox. It is a charming little show that was perfect to watch while in England.
