Road to Hana - Day 3
When I read about the “Road to Hana”, the description read…”Comprising 52 miles, roughly 620 spine-tingling curves, and over 50 bridges – most of which are no wider than a single lane – the journey to Hana provides exhilaration, wonder, and stunning scenery in equal measure”. It was a very accurate description. What a ride! It is hard to imagine how this road could have been completed in 1926 without the kind of machinery we have today. All but one of the original bridges remain. If you are interested in learning more about this history, click here. We drove 187 miles around most of the island of Maui. The drive from Hana around the southeast part of the island was the most treacherous and if we had know how bad the roads were, we would not have chosen to take that route, but it ended up being a fun adventure. Although, I will admit the guys were white knuckled I am sure most of the way as they drove. I know we were holding our breath in the backseat much of the way! I will post some video footage on the Itineraries and Photos page soon. In Hana, we stopped at a small restaurant called Hana Ranch Restaurant and had some great burgers. Then it was on to Maui Winery, which was practically at the top of the mountain. Unfortunately with limited capacity, we were not able to do a wine tasting, but we did grab a couple bottles of their most popular wine that we were able to sample. The trip down the mountain was much easier than the trek up and we quickly found ourselves back to the Wailea area where we did some shopping and had dinner at Tommy Bahama restaurant, which I absolutely recommend anywhere you can find one. Their Key Lime Pie is amazing! All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the day and made great memories all along the way.
